Acupressure Brings Natural Delivery While Doctors Plan a C-Section
Volume 10 Issue 15
A first-time mother, who was having a very difficult time in the hours leading up to the delivery of her child, was greatly helped with acupressure administered by an attending nurse. As a result, a child who very likely would have come into the world via a Caesarean Section arrived through a natural birth.
The 32-year-old expectant mother was having a very difficult labor and had already been placed on Pitocin® (a drug that increases contractions), but was not making any progress. There was also concern that the baby’s head was not in position to fit through the pelvis. A C-section was being considered as the baby’s head should have descended by this point in the delivery process.
It was at this stage that nurse Pamela Wallach began to administer acupressure to the mother. Ms. Wallach, a nurse with 21 years of experience, who had also studied Chinese medicine at the Midwest Center for the Study of Oriental Medicine in Chicago.
The nurse performed acupressure on the mother’s back while enlisting the help of the husband to apply pressure to a point on her feet. Acupressure helped the mother with her labor by regulating and increasing the circulation of blood and qi (energy), plus inducing downward movement of the baby’s head.
Within just 20 minutes the contractions became more efficient and stronger in intensity. The Pitocin flow was reduced as the woman’s own contractions began to engage. Her mental outlook also greatly improved as she began to feel the baby’s head moving downward and into birthing position.
After one hour, the mother was completely dilated and ready to push. Within one more hour of pushing, the mother delivered spontaneously. All involved were elated and very pleased. By looking at the situation and the body in a different way and moving the blood and energy, a natural birth occurred and a C-section was avoided.

ACUPUNCTURE EFFECTIVELY REPLACES DRUG THERAPY IN SOME CASES
Vol. 6 Issue 99
Acupuncture is finding its place in the emergency room, not only to ease patients’ pain and anxiety, but also as an effective treatment and means to reduce the need for drugs.
Dr. Martha Grout, a Phoenix doctor and Acupuncturist, began treating emergency room patients at Phoenix Memorial Hospital in 1997 with Acupuncture to supplement the practice of western medicine for conditions ranging from head and back pain, to anxiety, depression and stress-related illnesses, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Grout led a 6-month study of Acupuncture treatments that were used on more than 100 ER patients in 1999-2000. The study was published in Medical Acupuncture, the journal of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.
Among the 16 patients who sought treatment for headache pain, 62% were pain-free or experienced 80% relief after the Acupuncture treatment; of 77 patients with fractures, strains or sprains, 30% were pain-free (or almost so) after the Acupuncture — which was administered before casting, when the patient’s pain level is typically severe; and 42% of the patients who had pain from toothache, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or tennis elbow, said Acupuncture totally eliminated the pain when drug treatment hadn’t worked.
Results of the study show that Acupuncture treatments not only helped ease the patients’ pain and anxiety, but also eliminated the need for medication in some of the cases. “When that happens,” Grout said, “You can send the patients home clear-headed.”

| Toxic Sewer Sludge in your Food

Toxic Sewage Sludge in Your Food December 17 2009 | 11,970 views
The increasing use of sewage sludge as fertilizer for your food is an under-publicized and often hidden threat. Sludge is the toxic mix that is created by our municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Just about anything that is flushed down toilets or that ends up in sewers is in this sludge; the pollutants in sludge come not just from household sewage, but also from every hospital, industrial plant, and stormwater drain.
For a long time, sludge was simply dumped in the oceans. Over time, it became apparent that this was an environmental and human health disaster. An alternative solution has been pushed since the 1980’s by the U.S. government. The EPA determined that a good way to dispose of treated sewage sludge was to legally distribute it as a cheap alternative to fertilizer.
Unsurprisingly, scientific analysis of the poisons in sewage sludge shows it's the wrong, and dangerous, solution for U.S. farmers and communities. Unfortunately, many American farmers and gardeners are unknowingly using sludge-derived "compost," which is given away free in many cities throughout the United States.
As a result, farms and homes across the country have been unknowingly spreading hazardous chemicals and heavy metals on their fields, lawns and gardens.
Meanwhile, Michael Mack, the chief executive of Syngenta, a Swiss agribusiness giant that makes pesticides, is waging war against the organic movement as a whole. He argues that, “Organic food is not only not better for the planet. It is categorically worse.”
“If the whole planet were to suddenly switch to organic farming tomorrow, it would be an ecological disaster,” he said. Pesticides, he argued, “have been proven safe and effective and absolutely not harmful to the environment or to humans.”
Of course, Mr. Mack dismissed the notion that Syngenta, a company that sold nearly $12-billion worth of “crop protection” technologies last year, felt threatened by the organic movement.

Will Anyone in Their Right Mind Actually Buy Into These Three New Vaccines? Posted by: Dr. Mercola November 07 2009 | 134,534 views
A storm has erupted over the announcement last month that an experimental AIDS vaccine tested in Thailand proved modestly effective. It was billed as a major scientific advance — the long-awaited hard evidence that it is possible to inoculate people against AIDS. But now the trial has been called into question in a way that is overblown and possibly destructive.
But this isn’t the first time the efficacy and safety of a vaccine has been called into question. The government recently announced that $10 million of stimulus money would be used to fund a phase 3 clinical trial of a promising anti-smoking vaccine produced by Nabi Pharmaceuticals of Rockville, Md. However, another company working on a similar vaccine has not been so successful.
Cytos Biotechnology Ltd. said this week that a trial of its nicotine vaccine had failed to reduce smoking behaviors. The study, which is continuing, involved 200 smokers who were motivated to quit. The researchers found that the vaccine, designed to bind nicotine in the blood and prevent it from reaching the brain, was safe and well tolerated. But apparently it did not stimulate high enough levels of antibodies to produce the desired response.
The moment evidence was found that obesity may be linked to a virus, opportunistic drug company researchers dove into developing an “obesity vaccine.” Now researchers say their obesity vaccine could be ready for market in five years. Searching for genetic clues to the obesity epidemic, in the hopes of developing a vaccine against it, is not the answer.

Muscle is Hard to Build and Easy to Lose Posted by: Dr. Mercola October 01 2009 | 13,900 views
As you age, it becomes harder to keep your muscles healthy. They get smaller, which decreases strength and increases the likelihood of falls and fractures. New research is showing how this happens, and what to do about it.
Researchers have already shown that when older people eat, they cannot make muscle as fast as the young. Now they've found that the suppression of muscle breakdown is blunted with age. This may explain the ongoing loss of muscle in older people -- when they eat they don't build enough muscle, and in addition, their insulin fails to shut down the muscle breakdown that rises between meals and overnight.
However, weight training may "rejuvenate" muscle blood flow and help retain muscle for older people.

Yoga and Stress
It is well known that stress affects functions in all parts of the body. Hormones can be particularly vulnerable to the damaging influences of chronic stress. The adrenals are the first line of defense against stress (the "fight or flight" response), and can be fatigued with constant demand.
This is demonstrated in elevated, then eventually depleted cortisol levels and low DHEA. When this occurs, other hormones (such as the sex hormones) may also be thrown off balance, creating their own set of symptoms and problems. When looking at the 'big picture', it is easy to see how important managing stress is to our health.
Yoga is a popular physical form of relaxation and energization that is often undertaken for stress reduction. It involves an awareness of slow, controlled breathing and stretching and posing the muscles of the body.
A study conducted by the Center for Integrative Medicine of Thomas Jefferson University showed that a one hour session of yoga lowered cortisol in participants with no previous yoga experience, and after seven consecutive days, a significant decrease was seen. It is important to note that the cortisol response is an adaptive one, and that an elevation instead of a decrease would be seen in those whose levels have "flatlined".
A recent report in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine states that practicing yoga may boost a neurotransmitter associated with anxiety and depression. Researchers at Boston University School Of Medicine and McLean Hospital followed eight people who practiced yoga regularly, using MRS (magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging) to measure gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, in their brains. GABA is a chemical messenger (the most prevalent one in the brain) whose function is to reduce the activity of the neurons to which it binds. That is, it inhibits over-excitation. After an hour of yoga, a 27 percent increase in GABA levels was found. Eleven control subjects who had read for an hour showed no increase.
A great number of patients tested here at Labrix show some form of adrenal fatigue or dysregulation. It may be of note to recommend yoga as part of their recovery plan. While yoga has long been touted as a stress reliever, scientific evidence is now proving it to be true.

| NSAIDs vs. Home Exercise For Chronic Low Back Pain
|
Print-Friendly | Email Article | Article Search |
|
Japanese researchers have found home-based exercises to be more effective in the treatment of chronic low back pain than prescribed NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). While NSAIDs can reduce inflammation and pain, they are a form of passive care that fails to address functionality issues such as limited motion, muscular weakness and muscular imbalances, not to mention the many negative side effects associated with NSAID use. Home-based exercises are not only natural and far safer, they specifically address functional issues and deficiencies in a proactive manner. And thus, it goes to reason that both men and women (mean age of approx. 42 years) who participated in the home-based exercises versus the NSAIDs during the 12-month study experienced more significant improvements in both reported low back pain and overall disability.

| Vitamin D To Conquer Your Cold

New research indicates vitamin D may be effective at reducing infections and colds. In this new study, researchers found that a group of young military men who supplemented with 400 IU’s (international units) daily for 6 months versus those who supplemented with a placebo experienced a significantly higher likelihood of having no days missed from work due to a respiratory illness. Moreover, of those taking the vitamin D supplement half remained healthy during the 6-month study as compared with approximately just one third of those taking the placebo. While more studies are needed, this new research does appear to indicate some benefits of vitamin D in reducing sickness or at least, the severity of sickness. It should be noted that vitamin D when taken in higher dosages is toxic and negative side effects can and do occur beyond 2,000 IU’s per day.

| Antidepressants Ineffective/Inappropriate For Autism
|

Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to those suffering from autism. However, past research hasn’t been able to provide evidence that antidepressants are actually useful for those diagnosed with autism. A recent U.S. government funded study reported that antidepressants, more specifically Celexa, was no better than a placebo for improving repetitive behaviors in children with autism. Researchers have now completed a new review of this study along with six other related studies present in the medical literature. Their findings – there was no evidence that antidepressants were any better than a placebo at reducing repetitive behaviors or any other symptoms in children suffering from autism. According to the researchers who conducted this recent scientific review of medical literature, there is no basis for recommending the routine use of antidepressants in the treatment of austism.
